Started Judo 1970 Hughesdale Judo Club Age 11 years old Sensei Clive Birchmore Sho Dan.

 

Started shiai in 1970 attended most A.A.J.A. competitions. Received club best and fairest 5 years running awarded to players with attendance and competition excellence.

 

At age 17, 1976 began training at Nunawading Judo Club Sensei Robert Todd 7th dan.

 

From this period on I attended all A.A.J.A tournaments.

 

Including Nationals, State, summer, spring, winter and inter club competitions, individual weight and open weight divisions as well as team events.

In 1979 I was runner up in the A.A.J.A. Victorian Titles
(Michael Keane won gold at this event. The same year I was third at the A.A.J.A. Nationals in Nambour Queensland)
In 1979 I also was presented with the Y.Shinojima perpetual trophy Presented to me by sensei Shinojima who was visiting Australia for an AAJA coaching camp and was present on the day of the competition.
In 1980 I was a member of the Victorian B team captained by Sensei Peter Alway (past president of Judo Federation of Australia).
The Victorian B team won bronze at the AAJA Nationals. (PENNANTHILLS SYDNEY)
On the 29/03/1981 I attained the rank of Sho Dan. On attaining this rank I had accumulated 28 contest points when only ten were required. I faced three line ups running out of time all three times at the last person in the line. Twice that person was Darren Curren from my own club whom I trained with frequently.
In 1981 I won silver at the A.A.J.A. Victorian title.
Mick Keane won the gold medal.
This same year I won gold in the under 78 kg senior mens at the A.A.J.A. Nationals held at CLAYTON VICTORIA.
I was also a member of the Victorian 5-man team who won gold in the team event at the same A.A.J.A. NATIONALS UNDEFEATED IN ALL MATCHES.
In 1982 I commenced coaching myself at the Carrington Park judo club previously run by Malcolm Algie.
I coached from 1982 to 1987 at this club 3 nights per week. I also attended many competitions as the instructor and supporter of my students.
In 1987 finally injury free I began to train at Mt Waverley Judo Club (ju yu kai) as well as Nunawading with Sensei Rod Casey 4th Dan.
JU YU KAI with Mick Keene, Kendal Black, Darren Curren, Ian Kent, and Kevin Possat.
In 1987 I trained for the World Police and Fire Games to be held in San Diego California USA.I won bronze in the under 78 kg division at these games. I competed against several X Olympians from the states and Canada the quality was superb.
In 1989 I trained for and competed in the World Police and Fire Games held in Vancouver Canada I won bronze again in the under 78 kg division. Once again these games were attended by several X OLYMPIANS.
On the 01/12/1989 I was promoted to the rank of Ni dan Prior to attaining this rank I once again accumulated twice what was required for my grading.
In 1990 I was the recipient of the Dean Harris trophy (Donated by SOUTHERN JUDO CLUB. Malcolm Slade) This trophy was awarded to the player of the year that had accumulated the most competition points within the AAJA organisation for the year I was a second dan at this point of time.
In the same year I competed at the A.K.J.A. National titles under 78 kg senior men’s division and won gold.
Again I accumulated more than enough competition points. From 1990 to until 2005 I assisted in coaching juniors and trained and coached seniors level at Ju Yu Kai along with Mick Keane.
I also competed representing Ju Yu Kai in both city and country competitions on many occasions.
On the 10/12/1999 I was promoted to the rank of San Dan Judo Federation certificate number #3214 my certificate is dated the 10/12/1990 On the 05/03/2005 I was promoted to Yon dan Australian certificate #4241.
In 2007 I travelled to Adelaide and competed in the World Police and Fire Games where as a result of an injury incurred in my first bout I was only able to place fourth behind 3 very tough Russian X KGB Judo players of very good quality taking one to full time and another to extra time.
Kata History
2007
I was fortunate enough to attend professor Toshira Daigo`s kata seminar where I demonstrated Nage No Kata for him. I was then selected to train at Kodokan Tokyo in preparation for the Kodokan inaugural Kata International KODOKAN TOKYO JAPAN Intensively trained by sensei Toshira Diago 10th dan and Michio Fukushima 8th dan at this event I placed 8TH and received accreditation for my demonstration.
2008 Attended Kodokan seminar Sydney Competed at the JFA Kata national titles Gold medallist in Nage No Kata Gold medallist in katame No Kata NSW Kata champion pair perpetual trophy (name engraved on Katana permanently housed in NSW).

Attended Kodokan pre training for world titles Paris Trained by Tashiro Sato 8th dan and Taeko Nagai 7th dan in Nage No Kata.

2010 Became a member of JVI committee I was instrumental in the forming of the JVI Kata Commission and implementation of the scoring and judging of Kata program in
Victoria I was head coach and judged the first Kata seminar in Victoria Richmond Head coach of two JVI KATA COMMISSION SEMINARS in 2010.
In 2010 I became the Tournament Director of the JVI.
I also was the head coach and Judged 3 Kata seminars in 2011.
In 2011 I became the JVI PRESIDENT.
In 2012 I was the head coach for 2 kata seminars and judged at an examination day 2012.
At the JMIM 2012 I was part of the JUDO Masters In Melbourne sub- committee. I was instrumental in the organising and the running of this competition.
I judged Nage no kata ,katame no kata and kime no kata.

In 2013 I was on the JMIM SUB COMMITTEE and organised the judges for all of the Katas at the JMIM EVENT.
2011 became the STATE PRESIDENT OF Victoria.
Re elected 2012 over saw the resolving of the K fund issue a matter that had festered for over 20 years due to personality clashes and egos.
I was the individual who negotiated and secured the first Southern Cross International held in Geelong where 165 competitors from
around Australia took part.
It remains on the JFA and the JVI calendars. I also over saw this competition as the tournament director for the
State. This was the first open tournament held in Victoria in 20 + YEARS by the JVI. I also attended the Oceania titles CAIRNS where I was allowed to sit in on the Oceania election process.
I was also active as the weigh in personnel and back of house. assistant.
In 2012 I was involved in the weighing in of athletes and the back of house at the Samoa world cup event.
I have attended all states open in 2012, every seminar and committee meeting and sub- committee meeting in 2012 including every state training session.
The only item on the JVI Calendar that I was unable to attend was the Shoreham camp due to my commitment with the state team training program.
From 2011 until 2013 I was the JVI Tournament Director
I sat on the master’s sub- committee, the Kata Commission and the Tournament sub- committee.
In 2013 I was on the organising committee for the JFA Nationals held in Wollongong I also attended the competition and was placed in charge of the back of house which included weigh ins of athletes and the formation of fight order.
In 2013 I attended 6 JVI COMPETITIONS and attained my State C level for refereeing.
